Abstract

Mircolino is a desk companion that essentially does nothing: he runs left and right on his planet, sometimes stopping to rest, and when he's bored, he falls asleep. It's up to us to interrupt his peace or put an end to his boredom. With a clap of hands or a snap of fingers, we can interact with his world: when Mircolino is awake, one of these sounds will set off a firework, making him happy and breaking his boredom, which might otherwise make him fall asleep. When he's peacefully asleep, we can clap loudly to startle him awake, interrupting his dreams and making him begin to wander his desolate land.

Concept

Mircolino was born from my condition during a project: I was alone. Seeing people around me working together with their groupmates, I thought that a groupmate is not only labor, but also someone who keeps you company. Someone to watch while they mind their own business or to annoy during moments of boredom.

Prototyping

This playful interaction has been coded in C using a microcontroller to control a 32x32 led matrix
